From 1893 the Woolpack was one of two pubs incorporated into the Empire Theatre, the other being the White Hart around the corner in Old Market Street. Situated near the stage door the pub was a favourite haunt of both theatre goers and performers alike, the Empire closed in 1962 and by 1966 the area was cleared to make way for the new inner ring road and the Old Market roundabout.
